Yes, although you should keep backups on floppy in case you decide you meed
to extract something else.  For example, library source files are the
ultimate documentation.

These give the rules for time zone offsets relative to gmt.  You can probably
wipe them.

Compress.exe compresses (or expands) a single file.  Under unix, a compressed
file gets a .Z appended to the file name.

No.  Gzip is a replacement for compress (compress has some copyright
problems).  It uses one of the (pk)zip algorithms.  It does not compress .exe
files, or at least not in the sense that pklite, diet, lzexe, etc. do.

> What do the makefile files do ?

Makefiles contain rules for building an application.  They are interpreted by
a program called make (or dmake, ndmake, maker...).  The basic idea is that
make looks at the time stamps of source and object files to figure out what
needs to be recompiled rather than recompiling everything.
