The point is that previous versions of GAS could handle /* */ comments
without the preprocessor, where the newer version can't.  It is typically
a bad idea to remove functionality (or change it) which is used in a
large installed base.  Decisions like this cause needless rework and
recoding between releases.  But this is FSF problem.
