I don't think the emm386 in that version of DOS even supports DPMI, 
although it could.  I know that it doesn't support VCPI.  I'm using DOS 
6.2, and that version of emm386 works fine.  I did have problems with 
emm386 in the older versions of DOS, and I had to have two boot configs 
to use DJGPP, one for DJGPP that didn't even load emm386, and one that 
did for windows and UMB's and other programs.  Try upgrading your version 
of DOS (4.0 wasn't that good anyhow!).
