sorry for having been too speculative. You are right, setting keepmem=0
solved the problem. 4 MB RAM systems are probably becoming quite rare,
I think I should upgrade rather soon... What I don't understand is why
this a) happens only without EMS, b) happens although make + gcc
together occupy less than 3 MB even when not being swapped to disk,
c) the system crashes instead of reporting 'out of memory'. This time I
refrain from speculating :-)
