Subject: system() question

1). I would like to use GNUPLOT to display graphs of data generated
from my DJGPP C programs. I have tried using system("gnuplot filename");
which seems to work. Is this safe?

2). This question shouldn't really be here but can anyone recommend a
good book for learning C++ which isn't compiler specific (ie Borland or
Microsoft), and is not too heavy. There are so many to choose from these
days.

Many thanks in advance.
