ar and ranlib are from the FSF binary utilities package, I'm sure.
So you can get the docs from any GNU archive (check any of the GNU
readmes for addresses, I'm sure that you can get them
WUARCHIVE.WUSTL.EDU, maybe at SIMTEL and mirrors such as GARBO).
There are also a couple of CD-ROMs with all the GNU stuff on them.
The dealer I use is Walnut Creek CD ROM, Walnut Creek, CA, USA (sorry,
I can't seem to find my catalog for the complete address). They have
an X11R5/GNU combo CD, and their Linux/X11R5 CD probably also includes
GNU.
