According to my Compaq Hardware Manual there are a number of such
functions, which are handled by:

	hardware interrupts IRQ0 and IRQ8
and
	software interrupst INT 08h, 1Ch and 70h

For more info you must FTFM (Find the ... (Not so easy)) and read it.  
My own manual consists of about 12 pages of rather dense text and tables.
