Would that all developers could agree on the name of the environment variable
that points to scratch storage.  Most of the things I use look for TEMP or TMP
(or both, in that order).  The other exception is dBASE, which uses DBTEMP or
some such.  May I suggest adopting the TEMP-then-TMP(-then TMPDIR?) approach in
some future release.
