Just a suggestion: I observed that under certain circumstances, with
emm386 or umb_drvr installed, DOS tends to load programs into UMBs (!!!).
This usually causes really nice effect - program is given some 5..20
KB of memory. Programs with stubs (like ones compiled by Watcom or
DJGPP) behave especially nice - hang up or return to DOS without
ANY message. Maybe this mysterious behavior has something to UMBs?
