I don't think this is quite true. I tried GNU malloc with the same test
program, and it works better than BSD malloc. Upon looking at the GNU source
code, it does appear to be quite similar to the BSD version.
If anyone is interested in getting GNU malloc working, I can give them
a few pointers on what needs to be changed, etc.
