I also have have tried all of your test cases and no sign of a hang...
both .c files produced same .o file size. (the files where slightly different !)

I am still using stright version 1.09 (gcc 2.2.2) on a ASEM SP-486 (33MHz) with
8M ram, dos 5.0, qemm386, Novell, pktdrvrs, ...
(i have my modified go32 !!, should it matter ??)

anyway i suggest to use -v. in order to know exactly what component is
failing (even if i suspect cc1 :-).

another thing you could try is to run the components by hand an seeing if
it's a problem of gcc (or gcc16?) spawning.

If you can't find anything this way i would venture to say something
is wrong in your setup ;-).

Best Regards
