The gzip program is not compatible with pkzip, either the old (1.10)
or new (2.04g) version. It does not handle archiving files together,
only compression, like the unix compress program.

It uses the same compression algorithm as the new version of pkzip,
and therefore provides very good compression with good speed.

If DJ uses gzip to distribute djgpp, he'll still have to use some
other program to collect all the files together. On unix, this is
typically done with tar or cpio. I suspect that DJ won't do that, and
won't use gzip, because the "typical" MS-DOS user doesn't have cpio or
tar, or gzip for that matter.
