For what it's worth, I think that maybe we should wait for another release
or two and see if RMS seems determined to keep long file names.  If it appears
that such is the case, then maybe someone should go ahead and hack the file
names down to DOS-acceptable lengths.  I know this would be an annoyance, but
it would hardly be the first time someone had to rename files to conform to
Messy-DOS limitations.

In another post, Alan Etheridge talked about his version of curses for DJGPP.
No offense intended, but I always thought the best bet would be to get PD
Curses to work under DJGPP, no small undertaking.  I tried once to port it
myself and had lots of problems.  I see that some kind soul has posted diffs
to enable us DJGPP users to use it, so I would recommmend trying that for
people who need Sys V curses compatibility.  I was able to get PC Curses 1.4
to work with DJGPP, but PD Curses 2.0 is much nicer, having color support and
a few other goodies.  For those who don't know, PD Curses supports most BSD
and SysV curses commands.
