The book to have for C is:
"The C programming language" by Kernighan and Ritchie. (Second edition)
This not only teaches from the bottom, but also includes the full ANSI C
standard (draft, but more or less complete).

If you'll use only ANSI C routines (see book above), your code will
run on any valid ANSI C compiler (including gcc, using "-ansi" switch).
