Probably option 1.  It takes *many* hours to do a build from source
for the entire distribution, so there's a chance that some .o's might
have been compiled with a different compiler than the one distributed.
I'll try to be more careful next time, but I don't really have enough
hard drive to keep all the build areas for the utilities (gcc, etc)
around.
