I have a temporary fix for my problem.  Thanks to all who replied.

To refresh memories:  I could not get make from bcc 3.0 to work with
gcc.  Someone sent me e-mail saying the this version of make turns on
dpmi.  I tried using make from tcc 2.0 and it works fine.  I am now
going to try dmake (appeared on the net a while ago, available from
ftp.uunet.net!/usenet/comps.sources.misc/volume27/dmake).
