Which part of the test fails?  The shell script you posted invokes
egrep 4 times.  Which ones of the invocations fail?

Ultimately, judging by the symptoms you described, I think there's no
way to debug this except to reproduce the problem in some simpler
situation, and then run it under GDB to see what's going on.
