-: What did you set the environment variables to?

I set them to the values they would have if my djgpp tree lived
on e: instead of c:, for example:

C:/> set GROFF_FONT_PATH=e:\djgpp\share\groff\font
C:/> set GROFF_TMAC_PATH=e:\djgpp\share\groff\tmac
C:/> set GROFF_TYPESETTER=ascii

This setup works just fine from DOS. Under bash, the DOS environment
variables receive the usual "translation", which groff doesn't grok.

I've not seen this with any other GNU/djgpp application that uses
environment variables. TeX, for example, runs just fine from DOS,
from bash with the TeX-specific environment vars inherited from DOS,
and from bash with the vars set in _bashrc.

I'll post details when I get back to my box.
