Either that, or the ported package should come with its own config.site, 
and force the configure script to source that file.

The latter.

config.site is in $(prefix)/share (and we follow that).  I don't know 
whether there are other configuration-specific files, but another 
candidate is somewhere under $(prefix)/etc.
