command.com /c dir | strings 
  works under bash (a tiny improvement, but it's not Win32/PE ...)

(command.com /c finger @bajor | strings)
  once again generates no output (pipe output gets lost)

I believe that report was incorrect, I haven't seen any problems.  I quite
often use the built in cmd redirect (ie 2> ) to even send stderr to a
separate place.

Redir seems to work fine.  For example:

  redir -o x.x cmd /c dir

puts a directory listing in x.x
