I have seen for example C++ exceptions stopping to work when
-gdwarf-2 is used (works when -gstabs+ is being used). I also have seen
that program crashes when I used -gdwarf-2, but worked otherwise.
For many programs I saw no problems from using DWARF-2 debug info.

(of course I'm talking about my experience with DJGPP and DWARF-2 debug 
info)
