That's true, but putenv.c does have safeguards against such uses,
which should have kicked in.  Can you see why didn't they?

Btw, the code Charles posted is an exact replica of what GNU `env'
(from Sh-utils) does at the beginning of its `main' function, so that
code did work at some point, and should continue to work if we want
`env' not to crash.
