I got this note from my Microsoft contact.  The initial report was on
the NTVDM crashes, return code on lfn rename, and return values for
4400 on lfn opens.  I will see if I can get them to put this in an XP
and/or W2K service release.  There are 2 or 3 other problems we've
observed since then, but if these 3 were fixed most of the v2.03
tool chain would work out of the box on XP.

FYI...
This has been determined as a bug, has been fixed and will be available
in the release candidate 1(RC1) of .Net Server.

We didn't have the test binaries.  It says in the text files which you
attached that we need to ask for them.  

Will you be able to verify the fixes?
