I can confirm that it is indeed due to swapping. In some mysterious
way SMARTDRV was being started in AUTOEXEC.BAT with defaults settings,
which means it takes 1MiB to use as cache. (This is probably the
reason I thought it wasn't swapping.) Adjusting that setting to 256kiB
(as per the FAQ) gives a considerable faster 2.95.1 version ar
operation (more or less the same time as 2.8.1).

If somebody is interested I have profiling logs on the versions 2.8.1
and 2.95.1 with little memory and with a little more memory.
