You may try build part without debug info and part with it.

You can find patch inside following page
	http://www/delorie.com/howto/djgpp/linux-x-djgpp.html
It's for building cross-binutils but patch can be used also native ones.

No.

I did not additionally hack binutils. Snapshots are built without any
patches (problem with local labels is fixed there)
