The size of all the lib*.a files is significantly larger than v2.02.  It 
seems that the reason is the local labels in the object files.  I didn't 
find any compiler option to leave them out, but "strip -X" seems to 
remove them (libc.a goes down from 758KB to something like 644KB).

Should I add "strip -X" to the library makefiles?
