May I repeat my suggestion of using {}? Curly braces are not
special to COMMAND.COM, and to Bash only if preceded by $.
Solaris' sh treats them the same, but they are special to csh.
In Make, {}'s without leading $ are not special. They have the
clear advantage of being more readable to humans and look like
Bash/Make constructs.

Of course, this yields *two* special characters.
