IMHO, it's none of Diff's business to do so.  A user could
legitimately want backslashes in the patch (e.g., to process the patch
with some ancient DOS-based utility), and the users should have the
freedom to do so without Diff being in their way.  But freedom
requires responsibility to deal with it...
