Oops! <Time passes while hacking away.> I get the same results with
_POSIX_SOURCE, without "-U__linux__": 
pos2:
        .string "_POSIX_SOURCE defined"

and with "-U__linux__":
pos2:
        .string "_POSIX_SOURCE not defined"
