Following the links to links thread with interest, I want to know how
you look at the issue of porting Linux UMSDOS system to DJGPP. I'm
more or less waiting for the kernel to let it build upon FAT, VFAT or
FAT32 (if it's there it's moving, I haven't been looking too closely).

UMSDOS is an extension to the MSDOS (or FAT) file system that let you
have Unix attributes and symbolic links on a MSDOS file system, which
is implemented by an additional file (--linux-.---) in each directory
which is "umssync"-ed.
