dos 3.x had a switchar command (to globally change \ to /).

the dos kernel doesn't really care whether we use \ or /)

Some applications parse the filenames...

All the routines should not do anything with filenames except
pass them to the kernel...

If you have to deal with braindamaged application, you can
deal with them individually...
