Sorry, wrong newsgroup, appologies etc, but yet: Problem solved. My second dos partition was Primary as well, no wonder it didn't format (silly me (and silly msdos, of course)). Yet, it strikes me as odd that dos _could_ format the first 90 sectors of the disk. It shouldn't be able to read them at all. And the other way around, when I booted with the 2nd partition as the active partition, I was able to reach the first partition, but couldn't read a byte of it. Strange thing: reachable 2nd primary partition, I'd say...
