Yes, that did the trick! So my gerbv-2.6.0 does read the files correctly, but both my version and yours suffer from the same UI defect in that the initial zoom is not set to encompass the actual range where the gerber file dropped its objects. Short of asking this mailing list for help, there was no real way for me to divine that the secret to transforming the completely blank screen into a view of the loaded gerber was to keep pressing zoom-out repeatedly until something appeared...
