I agree. This has caused me a major pain in the lower back when I ported GNU cpio (which puts the mode bits verbatim into the archive). DJ, if this change is not too much for a minor release, I recommend to include it. And while at that, can we also reconcile R_OK, W_OK and the rest of constants accepted by `access' with the rest of Unix world?
