LANG = 'C.UTF-8' You are probably being bitten by [1] As far as I can tell, this is a general problem with X, but cygwin unfortunately encounters it in a default install because (a) the default locale is a UTF-8 locale, and (b) we don't install the CJK fonts by default. Workarounds you might try are (a) install the font packages font-isas-misc, font-jis-misc and font-daewoo-misc (and restart your server), or (b) set your locale to a non-UTF-8 one.
