My bad. I had a bug in the strace related stuff inside the tape code. Could you please rerun the whole strace stuff (mt, tar) using the new Cygwin snapshot http://cygwin.com/snapshots/cygwin1-20050819.dll.bz2 ? Maybe we still have a chance to find out what's going wrong with your tape drive.
