Date: Sun, 17 Aug 2003 09:05:07 -0400 Lines: 257 Message-ID: <3F3F7D83.3030403@hotmail.com> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Complaints-To: usenet AT sea DOT gmane DOT org User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020530 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en Hi, a newbie here, my objective was to install Cygwin for a friend so that she could use vi. I've installed cygwin successfully, but various fundamental programs are missing, notably vi (or even ed) more (or less) and man (despite the fact that there are 801 files in /usr/man). I've searched the packages in the setup program, but vi isn't listed separately, and I installed everything anyway. I've tried to search but the package search brings up anything with "vi" in it, like "view" or "divide" or "david" :-) and the gmane newsgroup search says "ignoring common word: vi". It would help me if I could know basic information like, should I expect to find vi with cygwin? I thought the main advantage of vi over other editors was that it was found on absolutely EVERY unix system there was. Should I be looking somewhere else for a package? And if so, how do I find which package vi is in, when the word "vi" is impossible to search for. I'm also concerned that I did something wrong, since even "less" doesn't work. This is most odd, since there are scripts like "zless" which clearly expect "less" to be a valid command. As requested in the posting guidelines, here is my output from cygcheck: Cygwin Win95/NT Configuration Diagnostics Current System Time: Sun Aug 17 08:24:47 2003 Windows 98 Ver 4.10 Build 1998 Path: C:\cygwin\usr\local\bin C:\cygwin\bin C:\cygwin\bin c:\WINDOWS c:\WINDOWS\COMMAND C:\cygwin\bin\id.exe output (nontsec) UID: 31009(ruthy) GID: 544(all) 544(all) C:\cygwin\bin\id.exe output (ntsec) UID: 31009(ruthy) GID: 544(all) 544(all) SysDir: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM WinDir: C:\WINDOWS HOME = `C:\cygwin\home\ruthy' MAKE_MODE = `unix' PWD = `/home/ruthy' USER = `ruthy' CMDLINE = `bash --login -i' COMSPEC = `C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM' CVS_RSH = `/bin/ssh' HOMEDRIVE = `C:' HOMEPATH = `\cygwin\home\ruthy' INFOPATH = `/usr/local/info:/usr/info:/usr/share/info:/usr/autotool/devel/info:/usr/autotool/stable/info:' MANPATH = `/usr/local/man:/usr/man:/usr/share/man:/usr/autotool/devel/man:' OLDPWD = `/usr/bin' PROMPT = `$p$g' PS1 = `$ ' SHLVL = `1' TEMP = `c:\WINDOWS\TEMP' TERM = `cygwin' TMP = `c:\WINDOWS\TEMP' WINBOOTDIR = `C:\WINDOWS' WINDIR = `C:\WINDOWS' _ = `/usr/bin/cygcheck' HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cygnus Solutions HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cygnus Solutions\Cygwin HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cygnus Solutions\Cygwin\mounts v2 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cygnus Solutions\Cygwin\Program Options HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cygnus Solutions HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cygnus Solutions\Cygwin HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cygnus Solutions\Cygwin\mounts v2 (default) = `/cygdrive' cygdrive flags = 0x00000022 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cygnus Solutions\Cygwin\mounts v2\/ (default) = `C:\cygwin' flags = 0x0000000a HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cygnus Solutions\Cygwin\mounts v2\/usr/bin (default) = `C:\cygwin/bin' flags = 0x0000000a HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cygnus Solutions\Cygwin\mounts v2\/usr/lib (default) = `C:\cygwin/lib' flags = 0x0000000a HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cygnus Solutions\Cygwin\Program Options a: fd N/A N/A c: hd FAT32 12397Mb 2% CP UN RUTHY d: hd FAT32 38152Mb 44% CP UN 40_GIGA e: cd N/A N/A C:\cygwin / system binmode C:\cygwin/bin /usr/bin system binmode C:\cygwin/lib /usr/lib system binmode . /cygdrive system binmode, cygdrive Found: C:\cygwin\bin\awk.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\bash.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\cat.exe Found: C:\cygwin\bin\cp.exe Not Found: cpp (good!)
