I used to use ispell but now use aspell - much better - for instance it can be invoked from
email progrms (for e.g. mutt or pine) as follows:

set ispell = "/usr/local/bin/aspell check -x --mode=email" (for mutt)

this actually prevents aspell from checking the spelling for quoted lines ('>') in replies.
