As an appendix to my previous posting in reply to Stefano's:

With -ffast-math my Win95 120 MHz P5 laptop runs the test program in
about 6 minutes.

Without -ffast-math it takes about 1h 45m.

Under Linux, the diference is about 50% more time without -ffast-math.
