Thanks for all the help; I think I've begun to learn enough of the
dependencies to see why CVS tags are difficult.  And, sadly, 
I didn't get your email in time, and had to learn about the
problems with w32api and mingw the hard way...:-/

I hate being a newbie <grin>.
