This caused me some temporary grief:

Problem:
    patch insists on converting to DOS text any file it touches, even
    if the mount is binary.

Resolution:
    The temporary directory, named in environment variables TMPDIR or TMP
    or TEMP, or defaulting to /tmp, *must* also be on a binary mount.
