That did the trick.  Thanks.

I notice that, after having done this, my $path is
translated using /c instead of /  (e.g., /c/WINDOWS instead of /WINDOWS).
Certainly that won't hurt anything, but I wonder if it was something in
the code that translates "inherited" environment variables that was taking
so long.
