Thanks, but you most have found this out somewhere else, where might
that be?

Sergey's page [http://miracle.geol.msu.ru/sos/]
has only 4 mentions of "binary"
1. Warning: remount floppies/tapes in a binary mode! 
2. Stdin/stdout/stderr are opened now in binary, but not text mode if
not connected to a console. cat somefile.tar.gz | tar tvfz - now works. 
3. Signal handling in precompiled binary changed
4. The archive contains precompiled binary, manual page and config.h
required for compilation [about csh source]
