Summarizing what several kindly people said and some more info of mine:
There is *no* -s in my man page for gcc/g++ on unix (v2.7)!
Using -Wl,-s would have put me on the right track, as -Wl is documented.
man ld on hp-ux shows no -S, and on DECunix/Alpha ld -S is something else.
GNU ld --help on cygwin explains -S as stripping debug symbols.
Indeed all 3 have -s!
