About 18 years ago as a relative unix newbie of 2 years I typed
[some command or another involving foo]
cat foo

and got

foo: file not found

but ls showed the file was there; this drove me crazy until, after
complaining to some passing guru that "the system's broken!" he took
enough pity to come over to my terminal and type
od -c foo

which produced

0000000   f   o   o   :       n   o   t       f   o   u   n   d  \n
0000017
