There are two possible reasons for your errors (and I had them both).
The first is bad memory.  This is usually repeatable, though.  The other
is insufficient disk space.  If your /tmp happens to be on the same
partition as your swap, then this is most likely the culprit.  Especially
if you do not have a fixed swap file.
