   I think what you want is some kind of -exe flag that tacks on the
   extension to every executable that gets generated. A kludge, but what
   the hell.

There already is -Wl,--force-exe-suffix or some such.
[It's a linker option, and -Wl,-foo tells gcc to pass -foo to the linker.]
