  You are using an old version of the compiler.  You might want to
download a newer one from the cygnus site:
ftp://egcs.cygnus.com/pub/egcs/releases/egcs-1.0.3a/egcs-1.0.3a.tar.gz

  This is the current state-of-the-art GNU C compiler for Alpha and
PowerPC systems.  It includes all of the features from gcc2.8, plus
some additional optimization (a fair bit of which came from the pgcc
developers!).
