DJ et al,

The point of my original posting was to shed light on this anomaly. By
my experience, this feature is already "nuked" in gEDA, since it does
not seem to work. However, since it is "nuked", why not remove the
feature from the Wiki documentation (Master Attribute List for one),
which still says it does exist? Until that is done, it is potentially a
user-frustrating bug.

IMHO, The suffix feature is mainly for ease of reading the schematic,
especially by those who are not aware of the slots. This is most
advantageous in service manuals, where technicians not aware of the
original circuit design, are reading the schematics. In my view, the
gEDA workflow and tools certainly do not need the suffixes to function
properly.

Since I am making a note to no longer put the suffixes on refdes's  in
my future designs, and to use the work-around I mentioned in my OP
instead, my workflow is fine.

Thanks.
Girvin
