I have a circuit board with a L6474 stepper motor driver. I added a lot on pins there exposed pad is to get good thermal conductivity but have failed to get an opening in solder mask. I could also have chosen to add an ordinary pad but in such case I have to do without the pins because they are not allowed to overlap.

For several footprint pins to connect to same net I used same pin number. Observe that I failed to get a hole in solder mask with the pin approach!!

Then trying right now it is possible to toggle visibility but not to draw on solder mask, this is also the case in old version of pcb-rnd but newest version I do not know. Perfect solution would be to add solder mask polygon to the footprint I have. I have not investigated possibility to manually edit file and add solder mask.

I participated in discussion maybe one or two years ago and possibility to use any of the ordinay drawing primitives on any layer also in footprints is sometimes very useful.
